Artificial Intelligence (AI) conversations are everywhere and understanding the basics is a critical starting point of any AI journey. Traditional AI, primarily analyzes and interprets existing data. It is much more rule based and follows instructions to analyze data, find patterns and make calculations.

Today we are much more interested in Generative AI. This type of AI that can create new content based on the data it has been trained on. It can create its own output based on the learning models it has access to. This is becoming ever more popular in Customer Experience Centers where Generative AI is supporting clients more efficiently and faster in areas like seasonal hiring, increasing customer service scores and enabling a wider use of languages to connect with clients.

Edge AI is another talking point in the AI discussion. Edge AI refers to AI living directly on the edge devices near the data source. Think of those cameras that are able to identify the difference between a raccoon at night and a person with potential malicious intent. The AI can ingest and make an intelligent decision – sound an alarm to scare the racoon or person, or alert authorities. It’s action and response. Some joke that Microsoft Word’s original spellcheck was the first form of AI, though it still doesn’t always get it right.

While AI will never replace the human element, especially in areas requiring empathy, judgment, and nuance, it can bridge significant gaps in efficiency, helping teams work smarter and focus on what matters most.
