Dr. Shirley Jackson, a theoretical physicist and famous Black inventor, is world renowned for her remarkable contributions across business, technology, and science. Dr. Jackson’s research directly paved the way for the creation of portable fax, touch tone telephones, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID.
Her science interest led her to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she received a bachelor and doctoral degree in physics. With this accolade she became the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT and one of the first two African-American women to receive a doctorate in physics in the entire United States. Dr. Jackson is also the first African-American woman to lead a national research university, and the first African-American woman to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
We honor Black history by amplifying and celebrating the legacy of women like Dr. Jackson. IQ Wired was founded by a woman and is a certified women owned small business. We carry innovation forward by encouraging representation and supporting women within leadership roles of the technology sector.
